Practical guide to pharmacies in France

Everything you need to know to find a pharmacy, day or night

The French pharmacy network

France has one of the densest pharmacy networks in Europe, with over 20,003 pharmacies across 8,097 cities. Every pharmacy is identified by its green illuminated cross. French pharmacists are licensed healthcare professionals who can dispense medication, provide health advice, perform certain tests (Covid, flu, strep throat) and administer vaccines. No prescription is needed for over-the-counter medication (paracetamol, ibuprofen, antihistamines). For prescription medication, bring your doctor's prescription and your Carte Vitale or insurance certificate.

Regular opening hours

Most French pharmacies are open Monday to Saturday, typically from 8:30 or 9:00 AM to 7:30 or 8:00 PM. Many close for lunch between noon and 2:00 PM, especially outside major cities. On Sunday mornings, some pharmacies open on a rotating basis - check the notice posted on your local pharmacy's window. In large cities, a few pharmacies operate 24 hours a day, year-round.

Duty pharmacies: nights, Sundays & public holidays

The duty pharmacy system (pharmacie de garde) ensures 24/7 access to medication, 365 days a year, everywhere in France. Each night and Sunday, pharmacies take turns providing service in each geographic sector. There are two types: daytime duty (Sundays and holidays, usually 9 AM to 8 PM) where the pharmacy operates normally, and nighttime duty (8 PM to 8 AM) where the pharmacist is present but the door may be closed – ring the bell and explain your need.

To find the nearest duty pharmacy, call 3237 (available 24/7, €0.35/min).

Fees and duty surcharges

Visiting a duty pharmacy incurs a surcharge on top of the normal medication price. These surcharges are regulated and the same throughout France.

PeriodSurchargeHours
Sunday & public holidays€6.008 AM – 8 PM
Evening & early morning€10.008 PM – midnight and 6 – 8 AM
Deep night€20.00Midnight – 6 AM

Rates in force since 8 January 2025 (Assurance Maladie tariff agreement). With a prescription and a Carte Vitale or complementary health insurance, these duty fees are largely covered.

For international visitors

French pharmacies welcome visitors without appointment or registration. In tourist areas and major cities, many pharmacists speak English. You can buy over-the-counter medication by paying directly. For prescription medication, a prescription from a European doctor is generally accepted. EU citizens with a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) can receive reimbursement under the same conditions as residents. Non-EU tourists will need to pay the full amount and claim reimbursement from their travel insurance.
